Starting college is often described as exhilarating and life-changing—a fresh start and a new chapter. But while the excitement is real, the transition also brings a wave of changes that can feel overwhelming. From academic pressure to social shifts, freshman year is more than just fun—it’s a time of serious adjustment.
Though each student’s path is unique, there’s a shared goal that unites everyone: earning that degree. And while the journey may feel daunting at times, there are plenty of people who’ve been through it and are eager to share advice to help you stay on track.
When you start to see the to-do list piling up, you may find yourself beginning to feel overwhelmed. No need to fret… tons of people around you have been through it and can help pass along some small bits of advice to help keep you chugging along!
Sophia, a current Owens student in her last semester of the nursing program, shared her whiteboard method of learning new topics at school: “I write the topic or exemplar at the top of the board and write down as much information as I can underneath. I fact-check myself with my notes or flashcards, and if I miss any information, I will write it down.”
She repeats this process until she can recall everything without writing it down. Then, she uses the teach-back method by either recording herself or explaining the topic to someone else. It’s a strategy that blends repetition with active recall—two powerful tools for learning.
Another common challenge for freshmen is choosing the right classes and professors. With so many options, how do you know which ones are the best fit?
Zach, a graduate student from the University of Toledo, shared an excellent “pro tip” for registering for future courses.
“Ratemyprofessor.com was a great tool I would use to research professors before registering for a class. Especially if it was a common class taught by many different professors, it can give you insight into who you’d like to take a class with.”
In addition to this, Zach also encouraged students to be proactive. “… If you are ever interested in a class, do not feel shy to email a professor directly and ask them for their class syllabus or a brief description of how they will structure the class.”
Beyond academics, many freshmen wonder how they’ll find their place socially? A common question among many peers. Do I want to sign up for group activities, pick up a new hobby, and meet some new like-minded people in the area? How or where would I do this?
Fortunately, Owens offers a wide range of student-led groups that cater to cultural, recreational, and academic interests. These organizations are great for meeting like-minded peers and building a sense of community.
Have you felt shy or out of place going into school? Maybe you feel like you are having a hard time connecting with your peers? While we are all on our own paths going through school and working toward our career goals for the future, it is best to not feel alone or out of place.
School is for everyone, no matter age, religion, ethnicity or gender. You will find your people. When asked what advice one student could offer to another who may feel out of place right now, Alissa, a University of Toledo senior mentioned the following:
“Most importantly, be kind to yourself as you transition into this new phase of life. Everyone adapts at their own pace, and you should give yourself some grace and time to feel comfortable in your new surroundings.”
While there are going to be many ups and downs during this transitionary period of life, someone else has been through it and would love to help guide you along the way. Don’t be afraid to speak up, ask questions, and seek support.
Reach out to your peers, workmates, and professors. You will find meaningful connections, friendships, and mentorships. At the end of the day, every step you take brings you closer to that degree—and to the person you’re becoming along the way! Keep pushing!
