This past Saturday, the Owens Community College Athletic Hall of Fame inducted many new members during a basketball doubleheader for the Owens Express Men’s and Women’s basketball teams.

One individual who was inducted was Heather Sobbry, the first three-sport athlete at Owens Community College. Heather had a chance to talk a bit about her time at Owens and her experiences on and off the court. She spoke about how much the community of players and coaches meant to her, how during every game players from different sports would show up to support her and her team.
“It was just a big community of athletes. We were all looking to just stay together and do things as a team, and I think [Owens] was a place where we found that.”

Sobbry also spoke about her favorite memory of her time here at Owens. A third place finish at Nationals for Volleyball remains her most emotional moment, being one win away from making it to the national championship game. She added on that her emotions were high the day of her induction.
“[I’m feeling] everything, every single emotion. I feel it. You know, a woman in her 40’s isn’t always recognized or even though of, so for this opportunity, it was overwhelming, thankful and appreciative.”

Also present was Sobbry’s parents, who flew in from Florida to see their daughter be inducted. Her mother, Jules Sobbry, had time in her day to talk about her memories of Sobbry’s time at Owens. She reminisced about how hard working and committed Sobbry was to growing as a woman during her years as a student athlete.
“I feel proud, grateful and honored. I’m proud of all her hard work and achievements… I hope she is remembered as someone who worked hard and set high standards for future athletes.”

Sobbry was inducted after the doubleheader, along with many other previous student athletes that attended Owens. Their plaques are hung up in the SHAC and join the many who predated them.
