Minty freshness filled the air and smiles beamed from children’s faces. Owens Community College dental program worked in collaboration with the Toledo Dental Society for the annual Give Kids a Smile event on Friday. This is an event that provides a day of free dental checkup for at risk children from six months to 18 years of age. Not only does this event care for the community, it provides practice for students in the Owens dental program.
“It’s crazy to see how many people actually come out,” first year dental student, Macey Nicely states.
The clinic bustled with parents and children while first year students were trying to meet as many patients as possible. Residents and second year students guided the clinic operations and provided more in depth patient care.
Looking over the clinic room in awe, Jessica Bubacz, a first year dental student states, “We never see our clinic this packed when we are working on each other. There’s only like 20 of us, so it’s so full compared to normal.”
Students felt a sense of pride being able to help patients in their clinic while also experiencing how an office operation would work.
