This past Tuesday, Owens Community College hosted Harvest Hangout outside of College Hall.
Harvest Hangout included many autumn activities including pumpkin painting and fresh apple cider to enjoy alongside a Detroit Mini Donuts food truck that students could enjoy for free. Student Life was present to direct the event, offering group photos in a halloween/autumn inspired set.

Along with coordinating the hangout, James Zeller, Coordinator of Student Life, was present to give some insight into what his department does for the college.
“The main goal of Student Life is experiential learning… all of our events give students an opportunity to venture outside [their comfort zone] and do something they normally might not do.”

Zeller also spoke on how Student Life adapts to the chilly weather that Fall and Winter bring.
“We try to have some events that are inside, that are inspired to warm people up, and capitalize on things like the Super Bowl and March Madness… I’ll be honest, it’s not my favorite season. I like being outside. I like being spontaneous.”
Lastly, he spoke on how he hopes Student Life will evolve in the future.
“Over the last several years, we’ve seen an increase in engagement. In the beginning, there was a general reluctance to engage, and we’re seeing the opposite of that. The other thing I would like to see…would be more spaces on campus that are intentional about events. We make do with what we have here, but there’s not enough areas that aren’t conductive enough.”

For more info on other events Zeller and his department are preparing, be sure to visit the calendar of events on the Owens website, and be sure to attend any that you can with friends and family.
