Autism Awareness Week at Owens Community College is a full five days of hosting a week full of love and understanding. This autism awareness week from March 31st to April 4th,“we aim to celebrate the strengths, perspectives and contributions of autistic students, faculty, staff and our community through providing avenues for autistic voices to be heard,” noted Jen Hazel, Professor of English and organizer of the event.
Owens faculty and students will come together in the beginning of the week, Tuesday, April 1 for a discussion panel to learn about autism from an outsider’s perspective of not being on the spectrum and what neurotypical people can do to better understand and support people with autism.
In addition, on this panel, people who are on the spectrum will be coming to discuss their experiences of autism.
Then, on April 2nd, Owens will be showing, Autism Goes to College, a documentary film at 11 am in College Hall 100. A live discussion with Dr. Steve Culbertson, a Humanities Professor here at Owens Community College will follow and right alongside him to discuss the film with the online crowd is Professor Jodi Gore, a Social Work Professor.
On Thursday, an autism awareness workshop for instructors and student services staff will be held on Thursday, April 3rd in College Hall 100. During this workshop there will be limited bags filled with fidget toys for students or people who are participating and taking part in this workshop.
