The Owens OutComm Student Media Center is set to electrify the Owens Community College family once again. With much anticipation, Shocktober returns for the fourth time this October. The event will begin on September 26 with the 28 Days of Shocktober Kick Off and conclude (for the first time) on Halloween night, October 31, with the Shocktober Wrap Up.
Throughout the month, students, faculty, and staff of Owens are encouraged to create something that highlights a Fall or Halloween theme. The works created are not bound to a specific format and most all creative expression can be represented. The creations are showcased on the Owens OutComm Student Media Center (OOSMC) digital platforms – Owens OutComm Student Media Center (OOSMC) web site, Outlook Student Digital Newspaper, OOSMC YouTube channel, and OOSMC social media channels.
In addition to the creative showcase, Shocktober presents a great opportunity to your portfolio. Works that are submitted with correct contact information will be returned to the creator at the conclusion of event as well as the creations being archived on the digital platforms to access at any time. Robert Thomas, a Broadcast Media Technology professor at Owens Community College and manager of OutComm, was able to share perspective in preparation for this year’s Shocktober. Thomas pointed to the Radio Production BMT-211 students as the source for his favorite aspect of the month-long event.
“Watching the growth of the Radio Production students from the Shocktober Kick Off to the Shocktober Wrap Up is very rewarding. Seeing them connect the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ is what it is all about.”
