Tina Osment (left) and her partner Mary Sankovich work on assembling their three-tiered cake.
The Outlook’s editor in chief Katie covered yet another culinary arts class for the paper. She was able to capture this wonderful action shot of students making tiered cakes.
The photo was taken using the ambient light of the kitchen. The ISO was set to 1600 to ensure a quick enough shutter speed to stop action. The camera’s shutter exposed the sensor for 1/200th of a second. A wide angle of 20mm and an aperture of f/5.6 kept almost everything in focus.
The camera was held at a high angle and pointed down for an interesting perspective. Leading lines formed by the arms of the two students closest to the camera make the focal point of this image the cakes being stacked. Just enough of the environment is visible showing other students working on their cakes in the background. Great job Katie!
